How to Import M3U Playlist — Add IPTV Channels in Seconds
Complete guide to importing M3U and M3U8 playlists into your IPTV player. Add playlists via URL, file upload, or copy-paste on any device.
What Is an M3U Playlist?
An M3U file is a plain text file that contains a list of media URLs — in the case of IPTV, these are links to live TV streams, movies, and series. Your IPTV provider gives you an M3U URL or file that you load into a player app. The player reads the file, organizes the channels, and lets you watch them.
M3U8 is the same format but uses UTF-8 encoding and is commonly used for HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) playlists. Most IPTV players handle both M3U and M3U8 identically.
How to Get Your M3U Playlist
Your IPTV service provider gives you one of these:
- M3U URL — A web link like
http://provider.com/get.php?username=xxx&password=yyy&type=m3u_plus - M3U file — A downloadable .m3u or .m3u8 file
- Xtream Codes credentials — Server URL, username, and password (this is an alternative to M3U)
If your provider gave you Xtream Codes credentials instead, see our Xtream Codes setup guide — it is even easier.

Troubleshooting M3U Import
- Channels not loading? — Check that your M3U URL is correct and your IPTV subscription is active. Try opening the URL in a browser — it should download a text file.
- Missing channels? — Some providers limit channels based on your subscription tier. Contact your provider if categories are missing.
- No EPG data? — M3U playlists sometimes include an EPG URL automatically. If not, check our EPG setup guide to add one manually.
- Buffering? — This is usually a provider or connection issue, not an app issue. Try a wired connection or different server.
M3U vs Xtream Codes — Which Should You Use?
If your provider offers both, Xtream Codes is generally better. It provides structured categories, built-in EPG, VOD libraries, and series tracking that M3U playlists lack. M3U is simpler but gives you less metadata. For more on this, see our M3U IPTV player guide.
Lit IPTV supports both methods on every platform — iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Firestick, and Android TV. One subscription covers all devices. Read our free IPTV player guide to see what features are available without Pro.
